Mercury Retrograde
21st August, 2010 | 13 September, 2010

Mercury Retrogrades 3-4 times per year for approximately 3 weeks. Mercury takes just 88 days to orbit the Sun compared to the 365 days it takes Earth to travel the same distance. Mercury appears to move backwards when viewed from earth during these periods.

The planet Mercury rules communication, computers, travel, contracts, the written word and cars. When Mercury is retrograde, there is confusion. People forget things. There are delays, frustrations and miscommunications - whatever can go wrong in these areas seems to if you are not careful. Gemini's and Virgo's may be more prone to complications because Mercury rules both of these signs. The author is a Gemini, and can speak from experience!

This is a time when you should be careful when signing contracts, and if you have to, make sure you read ALL the fine print TWICE. Buy your computer or accessories before or after the Retrograde period. Computers and technology in general seem to experience hiccups. Messages conveyed via mobiles and answering machines are often garbled, overwritten, ignored or overlooked - or the device itself breaks down. Your lunch date may not turn up, with you waiting at the restaurant, or your business meeting has been rescheduled without anyone telling you about it. And, please, don't buy a car during a Mercury Retrograde period; you may end up with a lemon at worst, or a car that does not suit your needs after the retrograde period is over.

Starting a new job is also fraught with potential difficulties. The job never ends up being what you expected, and is certainly not the role you think you applied for. Don't make any plans for your holidays in 12 months time, because you probably won't still be there.

Any new project started during Mercury Retrograde often has to be re-done. Which leads into all the things you CAN DO during these times though. Re-view, re-vise, re-schedule, re-think. The best advice is to take time-out; think of Mercury Retrograde as your time for a quarterly re-view and to handle unfinished tasks. Re-assess your financial position, re-do your budget, re-organise yourself, re-duce clutter in your home, workspace or any area of your life that needs attention. If a "re" fits onto the beginning of any activity you want to do, go ahead, and good luck.

For those more technical or experienced with Mercury Retrograde cycles, you will notice in the table below that Mercury moves into the Retrograde zone approximately 3 weeks before the actual Retrograde. The period either side of the Mercury Retrograde is classified as the shadow, and is said to be worthy of consideration. Some people, especially Sun in Gemini and Virgo (both signs ruled by Mercury), may experience some earlier or residual effects covering this entire cycle, so worth paying attention.

The inserted tables below has been taken from the Matrix Day Watch Stations Report and is based on Australian Eastern Standard Time.

If you would like to know what area of your life (shown by the house position) is being affected most by Mercury Retrograde, you can purchase your own personal Stations Report which highlights all Retrograde Planetary cycles for 2011.

Venus Retrograde

The planet Venus is symbolic of things such as; love, romance, relating, values, self-esteem, resources, material possessions, desires and pleasures.

Venus retrograde transits occur less frequently than any other planet, and is retrograde for approximately 6 weeks every 18 months.

When Venus reaches its retrograde cycle, our capacity to consciously direct its energy is impaired, and we are challenged to stop moving forward in our desire to acquire things.  This is the time to reassess what we have accumulated and decide if it still holds value and if it is in harmony with what we want in our life.  This cycle is the time to have another look at whether we are attracting people or material things that will reflect our true needs into the future.

Have your values changed over the last 18 months?  At these retrograde periods, you are presented with an opportunity to re-evaluate where you are in life and how your values are reflected through your relationships and acquisitions.   Relationships, finances and priorities should all be reassessed.  Your focus on internal values will tend to overshadow your need for external expression; consequently, you may make adjustments in your pursuit of materialistic and external goals.

Existing relationships can improve or deteriorate during Venus retrograde.  Sometimes there is a sense of desperation that surfaces within a relationship; you know things are changing and you may sense that the relationship itself needs a review.  There could be a fear of making adjustments, and in some cases people may make a new commitment rather than honestly reviewing their current relationship.

Also, during this cycle, it is considered unfavourable for marriage or for starting a new relationship.  Although it is not unusual to marry during this cycle, either partner may find out later that they no longer want what their spouse offers or provides.  Conversely, relationships can be severed, with the partners later realising that the separation was premature or inappropriate.   Venus retrograde provides the perfect opportunity to back up and examine the quality of the relationships in your life.  This is not the time to make external changes, but a time to evaluate how and where changes are possible.  Only after Venus turns direct will you have completed your re-evaluation process.  No final change or decision should be taken while Venus is retrograde though.

In essence, Venus retrograde is not the time to make long-term commitments in relationships until after it has turned direct.  It is also not uncommon to attract people from your past during this cycle. Use the retrograde transit to objectively reassess relationships making sure that they are what you really want.  New values emerge out of these reflective times and can be put into action when Venus turns direct.  Take care of an unfinished past before attempting to create a new future.

Venus retrograde is not the time to purchase big ticket items such as real estate or a motor vehicle.  Major acquisitions made during this time may become a money pit (new home), a lemon (new car) or you may just change your mind on its importance or value in your life after the retrograde period ends.

Venus also rules beauty and aesthetics.  Cosmetic surgery, new clothing purchases, home renovations are all activities that could be considered and evaluated during the retrograde, however decisions should not be made until after Venus turns direct, when you will have a clearer idea of what is important to you.

This link below is to an article that will help fill in a lot of the detail about why the US Government and the Federal Reserve are bailing out certain companies in the US. It also explains the derivative market and how important it is to the financial stability of the markets worldwide. A very eye opening read!

Pluto in Capricorn
Raymond Merriman also has an article on Pluto and its impact on the financial markets, corporate structures and governments around the world. Pluto moved into Capricorn in late January through to mid June 2008, however due to the retrograde motion of planets, moved back into Sagittarius, the position it has occupied for the last 12 or so years. This transit was our first glimpse of what is to come when Pluto finally comes to rest in Capricorn again late November 2008 until around 2020. Stockmarkets tumbled and corporate America and other countries will never be the same again. Pluto is all about death, destruction and renewal or re-birth; "phoenix rising from the ashes" symbolism. There will be a huge shake up and shake out, and what is left will ultimately be worth preserving.

Update to U.S. Bailout Deal
posted : 30 September, 2008

Australians awoke this morning to discover that the US Congress voted down the $US700 billion bank rescue plan. AUD$60 billion was erased from the Australian sharemarket's value today, reducing investors' portfolios to 2005 levels.

The fact that it is Mercury Retrograde should give us a little comfort, because the deal was never going to be sealed in one sitting. Reaching a consensus would be nigh on impossible because of communication issues and any progress at these times seem to come to a standstill. One of the rules to be aware of during Mercury Retrograde; don't make commitments or sign any contracts.

All is not lost, because if they had reached a deal, you can bet your bottom dollar the rules would have changed after Mercury goes direct. With this delay, they can now re-group and revise their bailout plan, and with any luck they may get it right eventually.

The one major problem here is that Mercury doesn't goes direct until 16 October and my concern is that this deal may become so protracted that serious damage will continue in the sharemarkets.

I have faith that a deal will be done and that the sharemarket will rebound - but in the meantime, be very, very cautious.

This bailout deal made during the current Mercury Retrograde period is definitely not SEALED. Miscommunications & misunderstandings abound, and this is not the best time to be discussing agreements or contracts.

There will be changes, so don't rush back into the stockmarkets just yet!

Australian Election Result - November 2007
Posted : 26 November, 2007

If you reviewed my earlier news posting about planetary cycles and the Australian Election, you will note that the time chosen to do something does have a bearing on the outcome.  Briefly, because the Coalition made their announcement during Mercury Retrograde and during a Void of Course Moon time-slot, and also chose 24 November (VOC Moon covering the entire polling period) to go to the polls, these factors were in effect forecasting their doom.

The Mercury Retrograde affected their ability to perform to the best of their ability, being hindered left, right and centre.  They virtually could not win a trick.  Mercury Retrograde suggests that what ever is started often has to be redone, miscommunications abound, and the particular activity or event does not provide the results expected.  Mercury went direct three weeks into their campaign, which suggested that they may have been able to turn things around.  However, with planetary retrograde cycles, there is a shadow period of approximately two weeks before and two weeks after the actual station.  It may have been the shadow cycle effect, which the Coalition experienced in the latter part of their campaign, that did not help them move forward.  Many Astrologers just focus on the three weeks between the stationary retrograde and the stationary direct period, however we may be able to surmise here that the whole period should be considered.

An example of how planetary cycles and astrological analysis has been used in the past, I will cite Ronald Reagan (ex-President of the United States of America). During his presidency, he (via his wife Nancy) consulted an Astrologer; Joan Quigley. You can also refer to her book - What does Joan Say. If you don't have the time to look at these links, briefly, Joan Quigley was the Presidents' Astrologer for seven years.  During this time she chose all dates and times for his meetings and engagements - nothing was left to chance!  In effect she was his "Presidential Scheduler".  Read these articles and make up your own mind.

Although I digress from the political theme here, I will also use this article to mention that billionaire John Pierpont Morgan had his own personal astrologer; Evangeline Adams.  He has been quoted as saying "Millionaires don't use astrology; Billionaires do!" Astrology is used the financial markets with great success, but appears to be under the radar with most of the population.

John Howard announces date for election : 24 November 2007
Announcement : 14 October, 2007 - 12:00 noon (approximate time)
Posted : 2 November, 2007

Planetary cycles can influence the progress and/or outcome of an event or project, based on its starting time.

Here are two classic examples of planetary cycles at work. The P.M. chose a Mercury Retrograde period as well as a Void of Course Moon to make his long awaited announcement.

The planet Mercury rules communications, computers, travel, contracts and the written word. Mercury also influences mental processes and the dissemination of news and information. When Mercury is retrograde, there tends to be some confusion. People forget things. There are delays, frustrations and miscommunications.

Any new major activity or project started during Mercury Retrograde often has to be redone.

If we consider what has transpired in the Coalition Government’s election campaign so far, we see that some major blunders have occurred. The most recent example would be Tony Abbott's failure to arrive on time for a major televised press conference on Wednesday 31st October, 2007.

The Coalition’s campaign has been somewhat hindered so far. There appears to be confusion in the polls. Mixed messages abound.

Mercury went direct today, 2nd November at 9:58 am, and now the Coalition will obviously try to make up the lost ground and missed opportunities. Their efforts should be able to proceed in a more focused fashion from now on. It is as if the last 3 weeks were wasted and now they have 3 weeks to try to turn things around.

If we now look at the Void of Course Moon – “whatever is undertaken during a VOC Moon does not work out as planned - judgment may be impaired”. Again, the P.M. chose this inauspicious time for the release of their announcement to go to the polls.

And to further compound the problem, the election, scheduled for 24 November 2007, will take place during a particularly long Void of Course Moon cycle; 5:54 a.m. through to 10:30 p.m. This time frame will cover the entire polling period. This VOC Moon may also have an impact on how people vote, and as mentioned earlier, judgment may be impaired on the part of the voters.

Horary Astrology is a technique of turning a question into an astrology chart using the exact date and time when the question is asked. It is then analysed using specific Horary rules. Astrologers can ask questions, especially common at times of elections and for sporting events. Also, anyone can ask an Astrologer a question, and the time used to set up the chart is based on when the astrologer receives and understands the question - not when the person thought of it.

Some Horary Astrologers have judged the election result based on the date and time of the announcement made by John Howard. Using the announcement date as the base chart, a verdict on the outcome can be made. As this chart shows a Void of Course Moon, it often suggests that the status quo will be preserved, nothing will change, and the Coalition would remain in power.

Now if we get down to specifics; if an Astrologer asks "Who will win the election?", and there is a VOC Moon, this automatically suggests that the incumbent will win because nothing changes. However, given that it was the Coalition’s choice to announce the election on 14 October at 12 noon, we could consider this more aligned to "Electional Astrology" by the Coalition (to pick or elect the best time astrologically to take action or begin an activity). Therefore, if we consider that what the Coalition aspires to; to win the election, will not be favourable for them. Anything started when the Moon is void of course does not work out as planned.

To see if the Void of Course Moon has any influence, we will have to wait for the election results. It does look like I have a foot in both corners, but Astrology is not an exact science.

ASN takes no position on the outcome of the election, and offers no preference to any party.  These examples are only given in an attempt to show a correlation between mundane events and planetary cycles.
